Monica Chung

Pianist / Kauai Concert Association

Fortunate to call Kauai home, pianist Monica Chung is a dedicated performer, producer, director, and teacher for a colorful variety of events on this small island. A protégé of the late Alexander Slobodyanik, she honors her musical life experiences to the generosity of his teachings and support. She is also indebted to her time as an honors student at Mannes College of Music under the direction of Pavlina Dokovska, Chair of Piano Department and music director of the annual Mannes Music Festival.
Monica enthusiastically gave an uninhibited graduation speech as the Student Representative.

As a soloist and chamber musician, her experiences were rich at her home base in New York, as well as abroad at international music festivals. Some of those festivals are: Banff Chamber Music Festival; International Musicians Seminar (IMS) in Prussia Cove, England; Puigcerda International Music Festival in Spain; Ecoles d’Art Americaines de Fontainebleau in France; Tel-Hai International Masterclasses in
Israel; Leipzig International Music Festival; International Keyboard Institute Festival (IKIF), NYC; Beethoven Institute and Festival (NYC); and two early-years favorites – Meadowmount, and New Paltz International Music Festival. Her debut as soloist with the North Carolina Piedmont Triad Symphony Orchestra was at the young age of 10 as a result of winning 1st prize in the competition. More soloist engagements followed with orchestras in London, Hungary, and St. Petersburg in Russia under the late Sviatoslav Luther.

Monica began teaching as an undergraduate student, assisting and teaching ESL (English as a Second Language) college entrance examinations and summer courses. She became a piano faculty member at the historical NYC landmark, Greenwich House Music School, while she was completing her Bachelor’s Degree in Music. A year later, she accepted an additional position as a piano faculty member at the
Bergen Academy of Music and Art. A mini-lifetime later, she decided to follow her curiosity and deepen her yoga practice by undertaking a 200-hour Yoga Teacher Training at Laughing Lotus in NYC. She had no intention to teach yoga, nor did she have any idea that she would become a yoga teacher on Kauai, and reinvent her music career as a result.

Presently, she enjoys teaching a carefully selected number of piano students, music directing shows, accompanying choirs and voice, advising the Kauai Concert Association, and producing concerts in collaboration with internationally esteemed music guest artists. Monica also enjoys writing, hiking, exploring paradise, and occasionally modeling for legendary photography/designer couple Gilles & Louda
Larrain. Stay tuned, as this bio will likely change and alter in pursuit of what is proving to be a quickly evolving path.
